Christian Stemkowski is the owner of Edisto Art Retreats (currently Covid-dormant) and Stemkowski Studios. She holds a BA/History, Education from UNC-Greensboro, an MA/History from UNC-Charlotte. Areas of study included the Old South, the New South and West Africa. Christian is a retired middle school teacher and assistant principal who lives at the edge of the continent on Edisto Island, SC. She is married and the mother of two adult children, as well as Indy, the Aussie.
Christian loves the outdoors and paints en plein air whenever possible. Her inspiration comes from the the landscape, specifically the changing light on the marsh and the birds that pass her porch heading west in the morning and east in the evenings.
Painting in oils and watercolor, her art education has been self-directed, studying most recently with Shanna Kunz, Jill Steenhuis and Sally B. Miller. She enjoys painting in a regular group from which she receives kind and helpful critiques and support.
Awards include two honorable mentions for small plein air works in watercolor and oil.
Christian holds Associate Memberships in the American Impressionist Society and Oil Painters of America as well as the Charleston and Edisto Art Guilds. She holds the board position representing the visual arts on the Edisto Art Guild and works toward promoting plein air painting on Edisto by planning annual Plein Air Paint Outs.
While at some point, we hope to establish a separate studio space, the current studio is the wraparound porch on her home facing the marsh. If you are passing through and wish to view any paintings and can’t make it to the art festivals, send an email and we will set up a porch gallery just for you!
